A special education diagnostician at the Gadsden Independent School District was arrested Friday on drug charges.

David Muñoz, 52, was arrested after a three-year investigation by the FBI and the Drug Enforcement Administration Strike Force, according to FBI Special Agent Andrea Simmons.

The FBI said Muñoz, a resident of Anthony, N.M., was arrested in El Paso after he met with two Strike Force undercover agents and received payment for his role in two deliveries of 50 kilograms of cocaine.

He allegedly traveled to New Mexico, Texas and Mexico on several occasions, participating in meetings with undercover agents while he made the transactions.

Calls to Gadsden officials were not returned on Sunday.

According to volume 17 of the New Mexico Register, a requirement to become a licensed special education diagnostician includes both a bachelor’s and master’s degree.

Muñoz is set to have his initial appearance in federal court today. He is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Steve Garcia.

He will be charged with conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute more than five kilograms of cocaine, and could receive up to 20 years in prison if he’s found guilty.
