Regulatory stands on the agenda as CPSC Commission is awaiting the arrival of a new president.
The names of candidates by President Bush to serve as chairman of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Harold “Hal” Stratton, former Attorney General of New Mexico, is not yet in the Senate.
But during the waiting time until the confirmation, Stratton has been the subject of much speculation since its records on product safety regulation is not known. An article in the Washington Post by Caroline Mayer (Nov. 22, 2001) cites several collaborators Stratton, a portrait of an independent thinker, the law takes very seriously. Stratton has a private practice in Albuquerque, New Mexico, during the last ten years.
Several former employees Stratton praised the efforts, while at the Attorney General, in order to fight against telemarketers, pyramid promotion systems and art dealers sold fraudulently masterpieces.
William MacLeod, was director of the Bureau of Consumer Protection at the Federal Trade Commission’s in 1980, as Stratton “One of our biggest supporters” of the attack telemarketing fraud, according to an article in the Post. [1] (MacLeod is also the current Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Consumer Alert, published the monitor CPSC).
Jane Hadley, in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (November 1, 2001), that “no confusion” Stratton of former President Ann Brown. Hadley noted that Stratton had founded the Rio Grande and in New Mexico Foundation for the Advancement of “public order founded on the principles of limited government, economic freedom and individual responsibility.” [2]
